It makes sense to me. It often only takes one page to figure out if you specified useful search terms and need to refine your search; that 1% statistic doesn’t tell you how many searches were launched from an existing search page. There’s also the pattern of searching for something specific: if Google are doing a good job, they wind up putting the thing you’re searching for on the first screen.
I agree with Max, generally, you won’t have to go past the first page as Google’s algorithm does a good job on indexing sites.
But if people are only looking at the first page of results then their field of vision must be narrowing so to speak? Knowledge is not always logical and accidents play a critical role.
