There seems to be an anti-internet/Google/Apple/digital culture wave building up. Evidence? First Nicholas Carr’s book “The Shallows.” Next we have a forthcoming book called “Alone together” by Sherry Turkle. Then there’s the recent fuss and Apple being rotten to the core in terms of iPhones that don’t work (or their refusal to accept this as a problem) and their use of rare earth minerals like Tantalum that are largely found in countries such as Congo (questions about ethics et al).
The Apple one is largely a fuss about nothing (but expect the shine to come off Apple as anti-establishment soon) but there is serious evidence building up about the myth of multi-tasking and the impacts of too much information.
The lastest stat is from the New York Times, which quotes a figure (not that new actually) that the average office worker spends 11 minutes working on a task before being distracted and then takes 25 minutes to remember (or at least get back to) what he or she was doing. Keep an eye on this, it’s going to build. How about a Google anti-trust case?
